Safe Driver Insurance Program
(SDIP)

The Safe Driver Insurance Plan(SDIP) is a program mandated by state law that encourages safe driving by rewarding drivers who do not cause an accident, or incur a traffic law violation and by making sure that high-risk drivers pay a greater share of insurance costs. The SDIP premium adjustment is the last step in the rating process after all discounts and rating factors have been applied.

Under SDIP, you incur surcharge points for traffic violation and at-fault accidents. You earn a credit point for each incident-free year(any one-year periods immediately preceding the policy effective date for which you have had no violations or at-fault accidents). You do not incur surcharge points for your first minor traffic violation during the policy Experience Period(six years), but you do not earn a credit point for that year.

Steps 16-35: Each surcharge step represents a 7% increase in Compulsory Bodily Injury(Part 1), Personal Injury Protection(Part 2), and damage to Someone Else's Property(Part 4) and a 6% increase in Collision(Part 7).

Steps 9-14: Each credit step represents a 7% decrease in Compulsory Bodily Injury(Part 1), Personal Injury Protection(Part 2), and Damage to Someone Else's Property(Part 4) and a 6% decrease in Collision(Part 7).

Major Traffic Law Violation examples include; operating under the influence of liquor or narcotics, leaving the scene of an accident, and refusing to stop for a police officer.
Major At-Fault Accident if you are more than 50% at fault if claim payment is over $2,000.
Minor At-Fault Accident if you are more than 50% at fault and claim payment is between $500-$2,000.
Minor Traffic Law Violation examples include; speeding, operating a vehicle without a valid inspection sticker, and failure to obey traffic lights.

The Clean Slate Rule can help you if you resolve to drive better. If you have a bad driving history with many surchargeable incidents and are paying a high surcharge premium, you can earn credit points by maintaining three consecutive years of incident-free driving. If you do not cause any accidents or incur traffic violations for the three consecutive years preceding the policy effective date and your SDIP is 15 or higher, your SDIP step will be set to 14, a credit step.

For Out-Of-State Drivers you can qualify for a SDIP 9 if you have had no at-fault accidents and no moving violations in the past six years. If you are not from the USA you must also provide proof of this from either your old insurance company or your previous' state Department of Motor Vehicles. If you have had any at-fault accidents and/or any traffic law violations your SDIP will be 15.
